If you ask me who is my favorite visual or cartoon artist or if I can recommend a good book to learn how to draw cartoon characters in an easy way for children, then I will say this book “Drawing Shape by Shape by Chris Hart” matches to your needs.
Chris has many years of experience in the field and has worked in different publications, the most famous that I know (as I am not from the US) is the MAD magazine and he was a regular contributor to this “crazy” magazine.
“(…) author breaks down the drawing process into its simplest components, so it’s easy and fun for kids to learn.”
Book Depository
The easy thing about this book, is that Chris breaks down the drawing process into 3 different shapes, the basic shapes that a toddler starts to learn when drawing, and they are triangle, square and circle.
I will show you some page examples and some of my own drawings below, and if you are in doubt if the book really can teach you how to draw from basic shapes into something, then what about “try it yourself!” (quote borrow from a TV art program ART ATTACK by Neil Buchanan during 90’s)
The book measures 203 x 266 x 22.86mm, 544.31g (ipad pro weights 677g) with 192 pages.
The art tools that I used to finish this humble artwork were (available at a UK store Jackson’s Arts Supplies):
– 3B pencil to draft
– Posca marker to outline
– Sakura Koi Brush Pen for coloring
– Water brush to make a watercolor effect
