Pepita: Takehiko Inoue Meets Gaudi

If you think this book about Antoni Gaudi by Takehiko Inoue (comic artist of Slam Dunk) is all about the essential works by Gaudi, then you are half right.

The other half is about not so well known of Gaudi’s life, how he became one of the greatest master of the era. Inoue takes us a journey to the past of Gaudi’s life.

The book is composed of hard cover with 108 pages, its size is 218 x 287 x 15mm and weight 678g.

The cover highlighted a portrait of a boy hand drawn by Inoue and I guess it is intentionally focused on the blue eyes and the letter “i” also in blue at the title.

Inoue tries to mimic Gaudi’s use of “fractured glass” technique in his works.

This double page spred (DPS) is one of my favorite illustration from the book, also reminds me of ***Attack on Titan*** anime. This mountain range is called ***Montserrat*** (30mins by car from Barcelona) and is probably where Gaudi’s inspiration begins.

A bit of explanation about the life of Gaudi before becoming master of (can be craftsman, architect, artist, you name it).

Young Gaudi is much different than the Gaudi we know from the current days.

Casa Mila is basically all scupture and the roof is a must visit!

Some detail works in different material, and all easily recognized as they are from the hands of Gaudi. Over ornamentation, exaggeration, black and white or colorful tiling, are all signature of Gaudi’s work.

At the beginning, I thought this book is some kind of how Inoue combine his drawing styles with the master pieces of Gaudi, but my guess was wrong, actually, Inoue becomes a tour guide and visit places where Gaudi left his sweat, blood (maybe) and lots of cigarettes ashes (as he was a heavy smoker).
